Like Gyokkō-ryū and Tōgakure-ryū, the history and lineage of Kotō-ryū mentioned famous warriors who experimented on the battlefield: assassination missions, daily life struggles, the various kosshi-jutsu and koppō-jutsu aspects. The scroll of this Ryū-ha mentioned a science originating from China that included the knowledge of pharmacopoeia, a meridian weak point healing method and science to destroy them. Chōbushō is the name of the warrior who came from China to japan and left in Iga region. Then, as for the mentioned ryū-ha, the science of Koppō-jutsu that includes the Gyōhō (強法) and the sciences of various weapons were passed down through different families which added their own knowledge and experience. Toda Sakyō Isshinsai is the one who named the ryū-ha and is considered as the one who created the ryū-ha from the Gyokkō-ryū’s science. The bio-mechanics were straight forward and required a very subtle flexible, fluidity based in the gokui kyōjaku gōjū aru bekarazu (強弱剛柔有可不) used in all ryū. Kotō-ryū also use the kosshijutsu and the skeleton to apply the pressure of the strike. Here too the Tanren (鍛錬) exercise, as well as the shape and movement of the body as a weapon are crucial. One of the main gokui from this ryū-ha is “拳矢如、體弩弓如 » ,” the hand like the arrow and the body like the crossbow”.
