The main Ryū-ha from where the famous Kihon-happō, the Gogyō no kata, Sanshin no kata, Taihen-jutsu, had been compiled and passed down from Toda sensei to Takamatsu sensei. Historically, Gyokkō-Ryū is deeply connected with Tōgakure-Ryū and Kotō-Ryū, in such way that the science of combat, and the bio-mechanics are complementary and form the perfect and balanced symbioses that have been passed down from various family such as Tozawa, Suzuki, Sakakami, Sazaki, until the Toda family. The science of combat from Gyokkō-ryū is at the origin of Gyokushin-Ryū and Gikan-Ryū. This Ryū proposes an extensive and revolutionary way to use the body, a way to perceive the combat from weapon life experience. It deals with all the various distances of combat from different weapons and teaches how to adapt to any style, or enemy. Use the kosshijutsu and koppō-jutsu as the bio-mechanics in order to read the enemy’s movement and behavior, the kyusho system to kill or heal, the short and hidden weapon knowledge under the name of Gyōhō (強法), same as Kotō-Ryū. The bio-mechanics from Gyokkō-Ryū allows movement with a particular flow based on a very subtle way to move that connects the whole body with different parameters of the combat such as distance, time, moment, space, rhythm, breath and how to read the movement of the enemy’s attack. The capacity to shift to a different state mentally and physically, no matter the weapon attributes, such as strength, weakness, flexibility and power. In order to reach the state of Mu-gamae (no kamae, formless, powerless), known as (強弱剛柔有可不), it is crucial in the formation and conditioning of the body. It is the same aspect in Tōgakure-Ryū, Kotō-Ryū and other Ryu.
The study of the different level of Gyokkō-Ryū should not be separated from the study and the deep practice of Kotō-Ryū, they are complementary in case of bio-mechanics and combat vision. One of the main Gokui of this Ryū is Manpō ichi kisu (万法一帰), literally, “10.000 law, phonemes come back to One (source)”, it means that every waza, techniques, applications, changes, transformation, etc. come from one use of the body.
